My husband and I stopped in here for dinner, and it was indeed premeditated; he came across The Thistle Pig via an article and just had to try it. We are both fans of local food, so this was a promising visit. While we aren't from Maine, we do enjoy visiting often and South Berwick isn't too far over the line and it made for a lovely day trip! The restaurant is both charming and quaint, with a warmth that is present once you step inside. The bartender was friendly and welcoming which made taking a seat there very easy. We ordered drinks and got to perusing the menu. I ordered the Foie Gras with red wine gastrique, cranberries, and challah to start, and he ordered a sampling of house pork and sausage (boudin blanc!). If I were on my deathbed, Foie Gras would be on the top of my list for inclusion in a last meal, and after experiencing yours--no contest! It was ethereal and delicious and the little bit that was leftover, I spread on toast the next day. Yum! My husband was in love with your sausage and ham and still raves about it! For dinner we each ordered a glass of red wine and for entrees, he got the Provencal fish stew, and I The Chicken with Brussels sprouts. Both were amazing and well portioned; filling, just enough and not too much. I'm a big fan of dessert and had to pass it up on this round, but we plan on coming back again and I won't miss it a second time around! The Thistle Pig is well thought out and the dishes are in the same vein, and made with love. The day after our visit my husband was inspired to make a Provencal fish stew of his own. The service was great and the staff were friendly and professional. We are looking forward to visiting again soon, keep up the great work!

So delicious! Great wines, beers and cocktails. Fried chicken appetizer is huge and almost a meal in itself. I ordered gnocchi as main meal and it was almost perfect; a bit less oil in the pesto. Salads were fresh and we loved that almost everything was local. Quaint yet casual inside

There are great restaurants, and there are restaurants that are just plain great. I have eaten in some of the finer SF Bay Area spots (Chez Panisse, Bull Valley Roadhouse, Flour + Water) as well as Portland's famed Fore and they were all great! But nothing compares to the joy and sheer pleasure of eating here. Whether it's the unexpected location in a cute little village, the always special attention the owner/FOH manager offers, or the quirky decor or menu...we always love this place the best. First off- brussel sprouts- just do it! Beyond that- follow your heart...even dishes that I wasn't sure I would like, house made tagliatelle with slow braised beef, braised greens in a thyme jus- ended up being home runs Delicious cocktail program? Yes Small but excellent wine list? Yup Great draft beer selection ( including super reasonably priced 4.75 oz selections)? You bet To top it off- extremely kid friendly (owner Jen supplies small chalkboards and chalk, and then brought out some small pots and utensils so the kids could cook) Oh yeah- casual and very friendly prices. If you want a great dining experience... Don't miss it.

I don't even know where to start, this place is just the very best. Nestled in the downtown of beautiful South Berwick, it is the perfect blend of homey comfort and edgy inventive dishes. EVERYTHING on the ever changing menu is absolutely fantastic and you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. Beyond the delicious food the bar menu is also fantastic, tasty cocktails and a delightful beer & wine menu make the whole experience even better. Perhaps the best part of the Thistle Pig though is the wonderful staff! The owners are friendly and personable and the wait / bar staff is the tops. Since their opening in May 2014 we have a hard time going anywhere else to eat now. We love being regulars here and even our 3 year old daughter begs to go to her favorite place thistle pig. It's for sure worth the drive if you aren't local!

Great selection of food from local farms. Good selection of non-alcoholic drinks! Will definitely be going back.

I loooove this place! Everything is so delicious! I got a foie gras burger and it was literally to die for. The burger itself was perfectly cooked ( medium) and the foie gras melted in your mouth like a little piece of heaven. My husband and I also got their brussel sprouts which were very tasty! We also shared a pitcher of one of their punches, which was perfect! I can't wait to try more of their tasty, exciting menu!

I decided to give TP another try after a few disappointing experiences I had when they first opened. I was pleasantly surprised by how things have changed for the better. The food was perfectly cooked and everything I had was delicious. I noticed that while the menu still offers plenty of adventurous options, the selection was better, and the ingredients list had been simplified. I was pleased to see that there were many new items on the menu, many of which I thought sounded like good flavor combinations. I will definitely be going back. It seems like maybe my previous bad experiences were just growing pains.

Surprise find in South Berwick for lunch. True "hole in the wall" and "farm to table". Had Garlic Sausage lentil soup which had a great aroma and taste. Had a bite of kale and fig sandwich from my wife - also delicious. Will definitely return.

Went to Thistle Pig for dinner with hubby and another couple. One person ordered the beet salad with feta and shared it with everyone. It was Excellant! I had mussels with Pernod. They were plump and perfect! I will have to admit, I think these were the best I ever had! I tasted the fried pork pie with buffalo that my husband ordered . It was very tasty! I generally don't eat a lot of meat. Everyone was happy with their meals and raved over it! We ordered the eclair for dessert . WOW! What a treat! Not too heavy as some eclairs can be. Perfect by my taste. Our waitress was attentive and very sweet! All of the staff were! I really like what they have done with this restaurant ! Very tasteful in design and decor! Pleasant atmosphere, relaxing! We were very happy with our dining experience and will be returning!

Well, I got hipped to this opening by a friend we once took to it's predecessor, Pepperland Café. I *loved* that place, and expected to be disappointed, no matter what. Well, surprise! Thistle Pig is excellent. We arrived to find that a hallway had been added at the door so people won't freeze in cooler weather when the door is opened. If you remember the old place, gone are the garish red walls, and the bar left, dining room right setup. We entered and turned right to the long, inviting new bar, done in an original stain and made of re-sourced white oak, as we would later learn. In fact, most of the decor is from resourced materials. The walls are a muted mustard, and a hall has been added heading towards the bathrooms (both unisex). Back to the bar -- it occupies what was the outer wall on the Berwick side, and stretches front to back. A small seating area occupies the opposite wall. On the other side (where the old bar was) lies the dining room, and a view into the kitchen area. There seems to be much more seating than there was before. Also visible is the original real brick. Now to the food. I ordered from a pleasingly unique and tasteful beer selection. No Bud here -- sorry, Charlie. My wife ordered a greyhound with Titos (for you liquor snobs, again, nice selection). The menu is simple and modest (not 100 choices, but everything is fresh). As much as possible, the food is locally sourced. She ordered the Brussels sprouts and chicken. The sprouts are fried and the chicken had a light spice. She is a plain food person and thought both were delightful. I ordered the Bratwurst sandwich with fried potatoes. I'm a sausage snob -- this was delightful. The dijon mustard was just spicy enough to make you interested. The Bratwurst was simply fabulous in every way, and was perched within a crusty, homemade roll. 10 stars. It was awesome. The staff was attentive (and, in fairness, they were not at all busy) and everything is spotless (but, in fairness, they've been open for a day-and-a-half). Also, the bartender was knowledgeable not only about his craft, but also about the mission of the restaurant and the menu. Thumbs up on staff. For dessert we ordered the maple and walnuts eclair. To be honest, this didn't wow like we thought it would. I don't typically eat walnuts, but these were delicious. We couldn't really taste the maple, and the chocolate sauce did not wow at all. The pastry was pleasant and the filling was excellent. Not sure if dessert is going to be a strong point, though. Overall, we were very pleased and will be back. That should mean something, because this is a one-hour drive for us, now. Good luck, guys! You're off to a great start!

Went in for my second visit the other night because my last was a great experience. This time around was not so good for me and trust me, I want to love this place. We had the brussel sprouts again, very good. I also tried the soup which was not good for me but waitress removed from check. I wanted the pork festival but was not available that night and although I love pork, hate buffalo sauce so steered away from pork dish. I tried the burger sliders but unfortunately they were undercooked and I struggled to eat them. I will try back again because it was christmas night in town and I think the staff was a bit off due to some cookie decorating offering thing. I will say that my last visit the pork was awesome.

We had been looking forward to trying Thistle Pig for a few months, and it did not disappoint. For a larger party, our wait was minimal for a Saturday evening (20 minutes at most). The ambiance is comfy and homey, though I was cold throughout our time there, so would bring an extra layer in the future (and we will be back). For starters we all enjoyed a craft beer from the extremely fine beer menu. Beer aficionados take note! My husband is a beer geek through and through and was super impressed with the selection and price. We decided to order all the side dishes for appetizers for the table, because they all looked phenomenal. The Brussel sprouts were A+, and the homemade pickles also. I would skip the horseradish carrots though- they were uncooked, and not what we expected. For dinner, we tried the risotto, pork trio, chicken and Brussel sprouts, and fishermans stew. The pork trio was insane- I can see why people rave about the farm Raised meat here. Liked all the dishes, although the seafood stew was not how I pictured it as described on the menu, and was too spicy for my preference. We totally dug our server: low key and prompt and friendly without being overly solicitous. Portions are very generous and we didn't have room for dessert, but it looked fabulous and will save room next time.

We've been back two more times since my first review. Opinions remain unchanged. The food is great and always interesting, although it's a little expensive for lunch when accompanied by a couple of glasses of wine or beer. My only feedback on room for improvement is that the chairs are not very comfortable. Small, hard surfaces, not relaxing or comfortable to sit in. We'll still be back.

Fantastic joint with high quality ingredients. Farm fresh greens, grass-fed beef, locally raised pigs, excellent seasoning, and fantastic cocktails. I have tried many dishes and each of my experiences have been above expectation. Not for fans of Applebees or other abysmal chain restaurants. Dont expect the generic when you eat here.

My wife and I went here last night with some friends. The place is cozy & comfortable with a great selection of beers; however, it is the food that'll keep you coming back. We all shared the beet salad, smoked salmon & brussel sprouts to start & then went on to our entrees of calamari, risotto, chicken & burgers. All of them were well crafted & delicious. We closed the evening with apple fritters & were all smiles. This place is a gem!

Ah-maz-ing food, cute and cozy atmosphere, stellar service! Was in here for dinner tonight since I have a race in the morning. Got grilled chicken with spicy BBQ sauce, corn grits.....it was fantastic! The grits were so good, I'm going to try to replicate them at home. The chicken was grilled perfectly, not dry at all, well-seasoned. And the sauce was very zippy! Made my nose run a bit but lovely. Left feeling happily full, but not overstuffed. Boyfriend and I have already decided that we will come up from Boston again just for dinner.

Food was good! We had the cheese plate, brussel sprouts, potato wedges & crab meat risotto. They were all delicious. Why only 3 stars you ask? Well we ordered the banana cake for dessert and were very disappointed! First off I believe our waitress forgot to put in our dessert order as it took a while for it to come out. We ate approximately 1/6 of the cake which had way too much spice & my friend found a piece of plastic in it! We notified not only the waitress but the hostess/owner as well. They did NOTHING about it! Didn't even offer to take it off our bill!!! They may have got the food down pat, (minus the banana cake) but now they need to work on their customer service!

Overpriced, food I would describe as "not the good". Drinks were great only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because the bartender was one of the best i've been to on the seacost - a very genuine person. I would recommend this place as a stop to get a good drink and nothing more. Advice to management : lower your prices and consider expanding the menu "farm to table" is good - but your so limited.

I'm already looking forward to gong back to try different things and see what new concoctions the chef comes up with. I was exceptionally found of an odd-sounding appetizer, grilled corn with sriracha mayo and cheddar. I could have eaten 2 more ears! Enjoyed the lobster in Pernod butter (I didn't care for the bread but my husband liked it). I also really liked the garlic sausage with lentils. I really appreciated that they were able to put the mustard on the side with this dish, and the sausage was tasty without being fatty/greasy. The owner came by to ask how we were doing, and I enjoyed chatting with her. Our waitress was friendly and patient as we asked many questions and made a couple of special requests. Also enjoyed the beer selection and the creative cocktails (and again appreciated slight customization of my fresh peach cocktail). We were visiting Historic New England's Sarah Orne Jewett house, which is right across the street and therefore the perfect stop for lunch. The ambiance is casual yet tasteful, and though the food is creative there is no pretension here (perhaps a benefit of not being right near the water). There doesn't seem to be a difference in price (or if there is, it's not much) between lunch and dinner, so it's a bit pricey for lunch but very reasonable for dinner. That said, we were full and only had a snack for dinner later in the day anyway.

Beautiful space, staff knowledgeable, fun and interesting, excellent food. Amazing spicy Bloody Mary, small but good selection of beer. We had the beet salad, Brussels sprouts, Pot au Feu and the scallops. Everything was delicious - a great combination of interesting flavors yet unpretentious. We can't wait to try the rest of the menu.

Great new restaurant. Charming atmosphere. Pleasant customer service. We stopped here for brunch. My husband and I shared amazing maple walnut pancakes and a squash cheddar omelet. Our son enjoyed an awesome breakfast sandwich. Can't wait to go back for dinner. Interesting menu. Food is farm to table. Wish them luck.

Highly recommended. We had tomato, summer squash Parmesan risotto and grilled chicken with salad. Both were excellent! Best drink I have ever had, Herb Garden. Very good ambience. This place will do well.

Returning from a Maine vacation, we found ourselves in South Berwick and hungry. We discovered The Thistle Pig on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Boy were we glad we did! I had the fried pork shoulder with cheddar grits and blue cheese and my wife had a wonderful watermelon and spinach salad. We shared both and were just so happy that we didn't want to leave. If you're anywhere within a hundred miles of South Berwick, Maine, I certainly suggest that you give The Thistle Pig a try. Friendly staff, chef owned, and a really great vibe, not to mention great, locally sourced food.

I have been to Thistle Pig for lunch twice and loved the food both times! The menu changes according to what is farm fresh. Parking is on street and has been available close by. The lobster roll was on a delicious brioche roll and one of the best I have had. The salad with pickled veggies was excellent as well. The decor is simple and clean. The owners/ chefs are very welcoming and have shared extras with us like fresh ham and pickled veggies. They were happy to accommodate us and add a truffle to our "truffle flight" for dessert. I am not a beer drinker however my husband appreciated the choices on tap. I plan to try both dinner and brunch in the future.

Wow this place was great! We were on the road and our eye was caught by the home-made "open" banner-- boy are we glad we stopped. I would drive 100 miles out of my way for this food. The dishes were deliciously balanced and well-proportioned. We loved the music and the down-home atmosphere. Even our 5 year old gave the spaghetti and cheese rave reviews. I would say Thistle Pig is 90% of the way to TJ Buckleys in terms of food wow factor and at 1/2 or 1/3 of the price! We will be back.

Only been in once for appetizers, eager to get back for more. Not only was the food excellent great flavor and unique (love the farm to table concept) but the service was great. The bartender who was pretty busy at the time, offered me a tea recognizing that I had a cold, she muddled orange and coriander, very nice touch, very personable & I would say she went above and beyond.

A great meal! Great vibe, very friendly, attentive service. I had a New England rum drink, my husband, a spiced margarita. Both complex and delicious. Cesar arugula, spiced carrots and fried cauliflower for me, burger sliders for my husband. Best burgers and fries, elevated a few notches. Look forward to the changing menu. Nice mix of flavors, salty/sweet/nutty in good measures. Root vegetable soup a real hit.
